Brain in the Box emerged from the recognition that thoughts, beliefs, and inherited ideas can gradually construct the boundaries of one’s own development. The work reflects a period of deliberate self-questioning—an attempt to identify and move beyond the mental structures that had begun to feel confining. Within that struggle, the painting considers the tension between lower impulses and higher aspirations, and the ongoing effort to bring those opposing forces into conscious relationship.
